CESRAN International is delighted to announce that Professor Nicholas J. Wheeler has joined the organisation as its Acting President.
Professor Wheeler is a leading contemporary scholar of international relations. He is a professor of International Relations at the University of Birmingham and a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the British American Security Information Council (BASIC). His influential scholarship has made major contributions to the study of trust-building between adversaries, the security dilemma, nuclear diplomacy, humanitarian intervention, and interpersonal relations in world politics.
His appointment represents another important milestone in CESRAN International’s institutional and intellectual development. CESRAN has long benefited from the association and guidance of Professor Ken Booth, its Honorary President and one of the discipline’s most influential and pioneering thinkers. Professor Wheeler’s decision to join CESRAN as Acting President strengthens this distinguished intellectual tradition while opening a new chapter in the organisation’s global engagement.
A particularly meaningful continuity also links the two appointments. Professor Booth and Professor Wheeler have together helped shape some of the most important debates in contemporary security studies, especially through their work on emancipation, the security dilemma, fear, cooperation, and trust in international politics. Having both scholars associated with CESRAN International is therefore not only a great honour but also a powerful affirmation of the organisation’s commitment to theoretically ambitious, intellectually independent, and globally relevant scholarship.
As Acting President, Professor Wheeler will contribute to CESRAN International’s strategic development, academic networks, research activities, publications, and international engagement. His experience and intellectual leadership will further strengthen CESRAN’s mission to connect scholars across countries, disciplines, and generations.
